In this section you can look at the censuses for the parish of Longhope. Census data can be a valuable source for both historians and family historians as they can indicate a village's size, population and available jobs. Longhope is mainly a farming community with many people employed in the agricultural sector, but just by browsing the lists we also had stone masons, wood turners and railwaymen.
The 1911 census was taken on the night of 2nd April 1911. There were thousands of missing people, particularly women, because the Suffragette Movement organised a mass boycott of the census (because of the Government's refusal to grant women the vote). Some women made sure that they weren't in the family home that night, and in other cases the head of the household refused to list any female family members.
The census database is fully searchable but only by name and surname at present. All census from 1851 to 1911 are available with the exception of 1891 and 1901. The 1871 is current being transcribed and only the first 78 entries are available at present. Use the red tabs at the top of the page to navigate around the different sections.
We have been given permission from the National Archives, who own the copyright to such records, to publish the census data in this way. The following document reference numbers apply: HO107/1959 (1851), RG9/1758 (1861), RG10/2604 (1871), RG11/2525 (1881) and RG14/15213 (1911).
