Longhope Medieval Feast

On Saturday 17th April the Longhope Medieval Feast was held at the Latchen Room. The event was to raise money for a warming cabinet, much needed now that the Latchen Room is host to so many clubs and functions! We raised £463.37 (plus a donation from Bob and Sybil Hearn - many thanks to them) and this, together with the £570.00 raised by the sale of the Longhope Cookbook in 2009, should hopefully buy the Latchen Room a really good warming cabinet. A good time was had by all!

Can I say a big thank you to everyone who contributed towards making it a night to remember. To all the people who helped decorate the hall, paint the shields and generally help make it look medieval, to May Hill Players and Crown Players for lending us costumes, swords, shields etc., to Des for his excellent medieval table numbers, to Bob Harris for his floral decorations and for being Lord of the Manor if only for a day! To Sir Richard Pett of Longhope who supplied the Limerick ideas and did the judging.

To Carole and Margaret for their wonderful sing-along, to Mo Cameron for being the raffle queen as ever, to Phil and Sarah for doing the bar and their generous donation, to Shirley for her support.

Also to all my serving wenches who dressed up adding to the atmosphere and all those others who chose to join in with the medieval theme. To all the people who cooked the food especially The Old Dairy Tearoom who once again made such a valuable contribution to our village and of course to Tessa and all my helpers without whom it would not have been possible and finally to all of those who came to support the evening. I hope you enjoyed it.

As part of the entertainment Sir Richard of Longhope decreed that the revellers were asked to complete a Medieval Feast Limerick! Each table was presented with just the first line. Here’s the winning entry which was ably read out by John Whitehouse on behalf of his fellow revellers:

"A yeoman once fell in a moat
And found that his backside did float
By gum the water’s cold
For this I’m too old
Next time I’ll wear a warm coat!”
