Serious Accident Closes Road

A serious accident involving three vehicles on the A4136 between Longhope and Mitcheldean has closed the road. The road is likely to remain closed for much of the afternoon, but diversions have been put in place, the Police tell us.

As at 3.00pm, the road has now re-opened.

The accident involved two cars and a lorry outside the Harts Barn Craft Centre at 10.00am this morning. A 11 year-old boy was cut from the wreckage of one of the cars by the Fire Service, and was flown by air ambulance to Frenchay hospital, Bristol, where he is said to have potentially life-threatening injuries. Another boy aged 12 years and a girl aged 13 years were also seriously injured, and a woman suffered minor head injuries. The police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

UPDATE

The latest update is that the 11 year-old boy airlifted to Frenchay hospital has been assessed, and now only has minor injuries, thankfully. The other two children also have minor injuries. It is believed that the injured people were a family of four in a Ford Focus, and that they were trying to make a right turn into Harts Barn, when they were hit from behind by the HGV lorry owned by Lafarge Tarmac. From the photo, the car is barely recognisable as a Ford Focus at all.
