The family of Richard Read Snr, of Longhope, have announced his passing this morning at the age of 89 years. There aren't many people in the village and surrounding area who haven't heard of him and his haulage firm he co-founded, Richard Read (Transport) Ltd, in 1946. It comes shortly after the death of his wife, Amelia, who he married in 1947. Richard Read started his haulage firm after serving in the Royal Navy in WW2, and after being inspired by his father, who also started his own haulage business firm in 1913. He was a great supporter of everything to do with Longhope, donated money, his time and his lorries whenever he could.
